The differences between LED strip lights DC12V and DC24V

When choosing the right LED strip lights for your project, one of the key decisions you’ll need to make is whether to go for DC12V or DC24V LED strips. Both are great options, but they have some differences that can affect performance and overall suitability for your needs.

  1. Different Voltage and Segment
DC12V LED Strips: These strips work on 12 volts.
DC24V LED Strips: These strips work on 24 volts.
DC24V strips have twice the segments of DC12V strips. This means 60LED per meter strip DC12V is 3LED/5CM per segment, and the strip DC24V is 6LED/10CM per segment.
  2. Power Consumption and Efficiency
DC12V Strips: They use more current (measured in amps) to achieve the same brightness. This can lead to more power being used and potentially more heat.
DC24V Strips: These strips use less current for the same level of brightness, making them more energy-efficient.
In simple terms, DC24V strips are better at handling power more efficiently, especially over longer distances. This means they often perform better in larger spaces or for longer runs of LED lights.
  3. Brightness and Length of the Strip
DC12V Strips: The brightness can decrease over long distances because the higher current leads to voltage drop (meaning the lights get dimmer the farther you go from the power source).
DC24V Strips: These are better for longer distances because the voltage drop is less significant. You can run longer lengths of lights without worrying about them getting too dim.
If you’re planning to install lights that need to cover a large area, DC24V strips are often the better choice because they maintain brightness over longer lengths.
  4. Maximum Length of LED Strips
DC12V Strips: Generally, you can run up to 5 meters (about 16 feet) of lights before the voltage drop becomes noticeable.
DC24V Strips: These can typically run up to 10 meters (about 32 feet) without any issues with brightness.
So, if you’re installing LED strip lights that need to be longer than 5 meters, DC24V is the better choice to ensure consistent lighting.
  5. Best Applications for Each Type
DC12V LED Strips: Ideal for smaller projects, such as accent lighting, under-cabinet lights, or small displays. Perfect if you need a shorter run of lighting.
DC24V LED Strips: Best for longer runs and larger spaces, like large rooms, commercial spaces, or outdoor lighting. They’re perfect if you need even brightness across a long stretch of lights.
  6. Durability and Stability
Both DC12V and DC24V LED strips are generally durable and reliable. However, DC24V strips tend to be more stable over longer lengths because they are less affected by voltage drops.

Which One Should You Choose? Go for DC12V if you have a small space or need cut to short segment of FPCB. Go for DC24V if you need to install longer runs of LED strip lights or if you’re working in a larger space, where maintaining brightness and efficiency is important. In short, both DC12V and DC24V strips are great, but the right choice depends on how long your installation will be and how efficient you need it to be.
